Response to brief

I have been asked to create a TV drama for BBC3 designed specifically for ages 16-24. I will have to decide the sub genre my drama whilst also making sure that it fits with BBC3s style and content. I have decide hoe many episodes I will create and also how long these episodes will be, the episodes I create will be shown every week on BBC3 on a Friday. I will have to create this TV drama on a budget of £800,000 throughout the whole series. I must not exceed the age rating of 25, I will need to be careful as my target audience is 16-24. This age rating of the show will be regulated by OFCOM and I must not exceed this age rating.
After the weekly episode are shown on the BBC3 TV Chanel, the series will be uploaded onto BBC Iplayer.

BBC Research

who are the BBC?

the BBC (British Broadcasting Company) are the nations broadcasting system in the uk. Its the worlds oldest broadcasting company and is also the world largest in terms of number of employees. they made around 5.064 billion in revenue in 2021. The BBC targets customers all around the world. They targeted to reach 500 million customers in 2020.

What is BBC3

BBC Three is a British free to air public broadcast television channel owned and operated by the BBC. It was first launched on 9 February 2003 with programmes targeting 16 - 34 year olds. They cover genres including animation, comedy, current affairs and drama series.

In the mid 2000s, the BBC decided to reposition and rebrand their two digital channels so that they could be more closely linked to BBC1 and BBC2BBC Three was launched on 9 February 2003. The channel was launched by Stuart Murphy, who previously ran BBC Choice (which is what got replaced by BBC3)

These are serious stories that hinge on events that regularly happen in everyday life. These film and TV series portray realistic characters in conflict with either themselves, others. Drama is regularly mashed up with other genres because most movies and tv rely on character-driven stories to keep the audience involved

Audience Research

my following ideas are linked to idea 1 in my initial ideas
The most common age in this survey is 16 and 17, with some 18 year olds as well. The Tv drama I will be creating will have characters who are of these ages, which may attract viewers of this age. Also the age rating for my TV drama is a 15 so viewers of these ages will want to watch this. Because the survey stats that viewers are mostly this age, this means that they is a larger audience for my TV drama.
My TV drama will be advertised as a crime drama which has the 3rd highest amount of viewers for my target audience. The sub genre with the highest amount of popularity and views is a comedy drama, I have seen this and decided to tweak my idea a bit so that the characters in the show will occasionally have some jokes or banter.

the option with the highest amount of votes is to escape from reality which means that this can be linked to the mainstream audience who watch TV dramas to seek security and to fit in with crowds, if my target audience is similar ages to the characters then it will gain a lot of viewers and popularity which will attract mainstream audiences. Escaping from reality can also link to strugglers in the psychometric system theory because they like to watch shows like this to have a break from their real life and want to get engaged into shows like this to "escape from reality". The main character in my show is someone who is trying to become more popular which some audience members may connect to at this age, the second highest vote on the survey is to connect with characters which can link to an aspirer according to the psychometric profile theory.

BBC 3 is shown on BBC Iplayer which is where my TV drama will be shown, it it also the second most used streaming website with the main competitors being Netflix, in first, and Disney plus, in second. If my TV drama is labeled as a BBC3 drama then this may attract viewers as a very high amount of my target audience use BBC iplayer to stream shows. One method BBC iplayer use to try overtake Netflix in number of people who stream is to make their platform free to attract a lot more viewers who don't want to pay for a TV licence. Netflix charge a fixed price every month which customers might not want to pay for.

Initial Ideas

Idea 1 one is a mix of a crime drama and a teen drama, my drama involves a boy who is in a school environment around the age of 17 who decided he wants to become more "popular" in school and decides to hang out with the wrong group of people, he starts getting addicted to drugs and looses all of his old and new mates because of his addiction. An old friend from his old friend group decides to help him but the boy gets him into drugs as well and his friend overdoses. After this he has to hide the body and live with the guilt and starts to have severe mental health problems. He tries to kill himself in the final episode but gets saved by someone last second. This will mostly be set at school, the drug addicts house, and the "hang out" spot.

My second idea is a teen drama, where there is a party scene where all the characters are all at school and the characters (party host, 1st to arrive, last to arrive, 2 people who arrive together, the funny one) all have flashbacks to before the party and how they all felt about it and how they prepared releasing their mental and personal problems. Each episode will be a flashback for a different character which reveals a new story every episode.

And my third idea is a comedy drama which is set in one house that a group of boys decide to all isolate together during the COVID pandemic. Each episode will be a new "incident" that happens in the house which will lead to a lot of comedic event and reactions, will also involve other characters such as: the police, neighbours, pet dog, delivery driver. These characters will all get involved. Will be recorded in the way that creates the atmosphere of a "vlog"

M3

The song I chose for my video is a drum and bass song by an artist called Darkzy who is signed for the record label "Crucast". This label doesn't tend to produce music videos for the songs the signed artists have created. However they do have lots of events all around the country and some internationally where the artists will play in clubs which creates a party and dance atmosphere to their music. I have seen this and decided for my video to target the usual drum and bass listeners by creating the same atmosphere throughout the video using clips I have recorded from very similar drum and bass events, such as DnB Allstars, in Leeds, And also clips from house parties with same dance and party theme to match the song and to appeal to drum and bass listeners. The video itself is a conceptual which means its based on a single concept or idea, the concept I have chosen for my video is to create a jumpy party atmosphere. In the video I have decided to add lots of quick cuts to the clips when the speed of the instrumental increases throughout the song to add a jumpy effect to the video which will appeal to the target audience because it encourages a dance and party atmosphere and ensures there are no clips that are too long which may cause viewers to get bored and decrease the effects that I am trying to create throughout the video.

conventions of the drum and bass genre include:

the setting - being in a club or in a house party (where the is genre of music is usually played)

lighting - dark environments with low lighting, with bright uv paint, or party light. I have used the bright lights to contrast the dark atmosphere to mean it stand out a lot

people - the people in the video are in party setting so are displaying themselves having fun

another convention is love, sex and drugs which I have decided to not include in my video to follow the 12a restrictions from the brief.

throughout the video I have used the camera to create sort of POV effect which means that the viewer feels like their involved and experiencing the party. I have done this by using close up shots in the video and shots in the middle of the crowds

I have added shots that are slowed down a lot to match the speed of the instrumental of the song at that point of the song. there are also parts of the video which have been sped up also to match the instrumental at the time but also to create a more fast paced effect to the video to increase the party effect to the atmosphere.

I decided to add lots of short clips together like this during the black screen before the drop. These clips are made up of clips I've gathered with UV paint and bright party lights, so by adding very short versions of these clips together like this add a flashy effect which increases the party effect I have been trying to create throughout the video. These clips also match the instrumental and speed of the song.

Andrew Goodwin wrote that these are the 7 conventions of music videos. Out of the 7 I have used:

a relationship between lyrics and visuals - there is one line in my chosen song. "see it through my eyes" in this part of the song I have zoomed into someones eyes and cut to other shots afterward.

relationship between music and visuals - I have done this my crating the party atmosphere, and by doing this I have also used the drum and bass genres style and iconography.

close ups of the artist - I don't have any shots of the artist in my songs however I have shots os very similar DJs signed to the same record company. These shots are of the DJs performing to a club crowd.
